Futuro House
Idyllwild, CA
This UFO-looking home was the first Futuro to arrive in California in 1969, and the only Futuro approved for residential occupancy. Designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen as a vacation retreat, the futuristic space-age design is significant as an example of mid-century technological advancements in structures and use of modern materials.
The property is officially identified as the “Donaldson Futuro” in recognition of owners Wayne and Laurie Donaldson’s extensive and faithful restoration efforts supported by Heritage Architecture & Planning. The building retained a high level of integrity from its period of significance and was successfully moved 130 miles and meticulously restored, helping to raise the profile of early plastic buildings.
Heritage assisted in the restoration construction documents, relocation from San Diego to Idyllwild, and successfully nominated the Futuro to the National Register of Historic Places and establish it as a California Historic Landmark. A commemorative dedication booklet was also prepared and produced by Heritage.
